Positive: This ryokan is excellent. A must visit for the experience. Great location and large rooms. Free deer to pet outside the hotel! It’s like having Nara on your doorstep.
Negative: The Japanese dining experience. It’s a Japanese tasting menu. As a westerner it’s not to my pallet as a gaijin but I gave it a bash. The dinner is great but the Japanese breakfast I just couldn’t touch it. No fault of the hotel. I’m just used to eating my typical for breakfast which normally involves continental or porridge. Also turning 36 means sleeping on futons can leave you with a sore back. Again Asian cultures like a firm bed setting. Great for 1 night but I wouldn’t stay more than that.
